$1bn 2Q loss for JAL
Japan Airlines International (JAL), Asia's biggest carrier, announced that it lost $1bn in the previous quarter, as the global economic recession and swine flu fears triggered a freefall in passenger numbers. The group has made drastic cuts to its flight services as it prepares for a second year in the red. JAL's net loss was YEN99.04bn ($1bn) in the April-June quarter, from YEN3.41bn in the same period of 2008. The carrier recorded an operating loss of YEN86.11bn from a year-earlier profit of YEN3.91bn. Revenue slumped 31.7 per cent to YEN334.90bn. "Our earnings results turned out to be very grim," said Yoshimasa Kanayama, JAL SVP. "We strived to cut costs. But it was not enough to offset the drop in income." JAL, which has announced more than 11,000 job cuts since 2005, maintained its forecast for a loss of YEN63bn in the year to March 2010, after a YEN63.2bn deficit last year. ($1 = YEN95.09)
