Multiple Russian Aircraft Intercepted over Baltic Sea on 29 October 2014
Portuguese F-16 Fighters assigned to the Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled in response and the Russian aircraft returned to Russian airspace.
And 2 TU95 were escorted in Portuguese air space too.
Eight Russian Aircraft Intercepted over North Sea / Atlantic Ocean on 29 October 2014
At approximately 3:00 a.m. CET on 29 October, NATO radars detected and tracked eight Russian aircraft flying in formation over the North Sea. F-16 aircraft from the Royal Norwegian Air Force were scrambled, intercepted and identified the Russian aircraft, which included four Tu-95 Bear H strategic bombers and four Il-78 tanker aircraft. The formation flew from mainland Russia over the Norwegian Sea in international airspace. Six of the Russian aircraft then turned back to the north-east towards Russia, while two Tu-95 Bear H bombers continued south-west, parallel to the Norwegian coast, heading to the south-west. The Russian aircraft continued over the North Sea, and Typhoon fighters from the United Kingdom were scrambled in response. While over the Atlantic Ocean west of Portugal, the two Russian aircraft were intercepted and identified by F-16s from the Portuguese Air Force. The Russian aircraft turned back heading north-east, flying to the west of the United Kingdom. NATO aircraft from the United Kingdom and Norway were standing by and NATO assets on the ground and in the air tracked the Russian aircraft throughout. At present, the two Tu-95 bombers appear headed back to Russia, but as of 4 p.m. CET the aircraft were still airborne.
for a country that's on an edge of a bankruptcy, sending these gas guzzling half-wrecks on a daily flyby for no freakin reason... it's just pure idiocy
wita.... looks like you are very smart on those fighter things. Maybe for you it is just a car in garage:) But do you know how much $ government need for one fighter operation (cost of fighter, cost of pilot training, cost of maintenance staff training, cost of spare parts, cost of ammunition..etc.) So please... be more accurate before to blame on some country who maybe don't have such resources to maintain fighter squadron... no offence.
btw I was referring to Russia, reading my own comment got me confused who was I referring to :)
Anyhow as for Latvia, I used to think that our country is too small to have a comprehensive airforce, now I'm thinking a pair of armed PC21 wouldn't hurt. They can catch most russian planes yet being much cheaper than jets
...yes, too expensive, but think... - no one from our boys or girls will never ever fly jets, way to the sky is closed for now. I stil hope in future should be some changes..
lai uzturētu F16, viena lidojuma stunda (kas iekļauj degvielu, maintenanci un overhaulu) maksā 50k USD (avots sagūglēts, bet izklausās ticams). Es domāju, mēs varam rupji aplēst, ka vidēji katru dienu džetam gaisā jāpavada stundu (citas dienas vairāk, citas dienas nemaz). Tātad bez tiem $47, par ko jau tev dažs labs pensionārs labprāt bietē sadotu, vēl jārēķina pakalpojuma "abonēšanas maksa" $18.25 gadā uz 1mil cilvēkiem. Bet ko tad tikai ar vienu džetu iesāksi, vajag taču vismaz 2, ja nu vienam maintenance jāveic? tātad cipari dubultā.
Šeit uzreiz jāsaka, ka Latvijā, katrs 5. iedzīvotājs ir nabadzības riska zonā, par ko mēs te vispār runājam, kādi džeti Latvijai?
Mārtiņ, arī nabagi un pensionāri jau maksa nodokļus un katru mēnesi daudz vairak neka vajag jeta uzturēšanai. Bet ir tacu starpība - īret mašīnu ar vāditāju vai braukt ar saveju... un padoma, kad ir izdevigak īret???
mēs neko neīrējam, mūsu iemaksas NATO ir smieklīgas salīdzinot ar to, ko saņemam pretī, mēs reāli dzenam "haļavu" un lai arī neētiski, mēs neko citu īsti aļauties nevaram
