P.S. Of course, it will not change the language of comments. But then it will be easier for us to understand (by the little flag near your username), that you don't speak or read Latvian.

Mārtiņš wrote a comment regarding HF (high frequency) antenna. Are they communicating in the far east and middle of Russia on HF?

Hi Vitaliy, I can read Russian, but I can't write in it so if you don't mind, I'll elaborate my question in English. the reason why I asked this is because normally, at least in West, you would use HF for transatlantic routes and places where plane is out of reach of VHF comms for prolonged times. Assuming this Antonov does not fly transatlantic, my question is - do they have to use HF for comms somewhere in Russia's middle or far east, Siberia or other remote places? I see that you already partially answered my question, I was just wondering is there a place in Russia's controlled airspace that is not covered by VHF..

on completely unrelated topic - I see your email involves b757 and since you're saying you're going to stay here, may I ask (complete long-shot, but eh), any chance seeing b757 back in Riga on regular bases? Enjoy your new home!

In Russia, they use modern navigation and radio (as well as around the world). HF antennas are not used as primary communcation at this time :)
And yeap, B757 is my favorite aircraft. I'm not sure if they come back in Riga (if you mean airbaltic's 757, currently operated by RoyalFlight). But as far as I know, technical control of these aircrafts provides by airbaltic. |

I wasn't implying that HF is not modern or whatever, what I meant is that if there's equipment, it must have a purpose, and if there's a purpose, I was wondering what that purpose is in case of this antonov. Yes, I know that modern aircraft do have HF stations, that's because when they cross oceans they need them. I've even seen a cessna 172 with an HF antenna - something that's required if you want to cross the Atlantic. Given that this antonov is not likely to cross oceans, my question was - where else is it being used, that's it, a simple question I believe

As I've heard (sorry, haven't checked it myself) in most remote parts of Russia there is not that much VOR stations so they use NDB, which is considered a quite ancient navigation facility. Based on this I thought that maybe there is also not that much control centres which can cover the whole area just by using VHF comms. Also Africa comes in mind, maybe that' s another place where An-26 would be using HF? We need to see some charts to check this!
